Terms of Use
The short version. HexStride is a game played on real streets. Play it on foot, be decent to the people you share a map with, and don't fake a walk. Ground in the game isn't property and can be taken from you by another walker or removed by us if it wasn't walked. Look where you're going.
What HexStride is
HexStride is a walking and running game made by Ben Dushnitzky ("we"). Where you walk becomes yours on a shared map of hexagons, and other players can take it back by walking there themselves. By installing or using the app you agree to these terms and to the privacy policy. If you don't agree, don't use the app.
Playing safely
You are walking or running in the real world. Watch traffic, obey signs and laws, and stay out of places you're not allowed to be. Never look at the phone in a way that puts you or anyone else at risk. The game never asks you to be anywhere in particular, and nothing in it is worth a step into a road. You use HexStride at your own risk, and you are responsible for your own safety and for following the law wherever you play.
Your player and your profile
There are no accounts to create. The app makes an anonymous player for your phone. You can add a name, a short bio and a photo, which other players see when they tap your ground. You must be at least 13 to play, or older where the law where you live says so.
Whatever you put in your name, bio or photo is yours and you are responsible for it. Don't put in anything that is hateful, harassing, sexually explicit, violent, illegal, or that impersonates someone else, and don't use it to share anyone's personal information. We have no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive behaviour. A player can report yours from your card, and we remove content that breaks these terms and may remove the player entirely, without notice.
Fair play
Ground here is only earned on foot. Don't claim ground with a vehicle, a bicycle, a simulated location, a modified app, a script, or by lying to the app about where you were or when. Don't share a player between people. We check claims on the phone and on the server, keep a record of every upload, and read every report a person files. Ground we decide wasn't walked is removed, and a player who keeps at it is removed. How claims are checked is at hexstride.app/fair-play.
Ground is not property
Hexagons, layers, ranks, badges and colours are part of a game. They have no monetary value, can't be sold or transferred, can be taken by other players under the rules of the game, and can be changed or removed by us when the rules change or when we find they weren't earned. Losing ground never costs you anything outside the game.
Other players
You can hide any player's ground from your own map, block a player so neither of you can reach the other, and report a player from their card. Reports are read by a person. Don't file reports to harass someone; that is itself a breach of these terms.
Purchases
If the app offers HexStride+, it is billed through Apple under Apple's terms, and Apple handles refunds. Nothing you can buy affects ground, score or competition.
Changes and endings
The rules of the game, and these terms, will change as the game grows; the current version is always at this address. We can suspend or end the service, or a player's access to it, at any time. You can delete your player and everything about it from the app at any moment: You → Privacy & data → Delete my data.
No warranty
HexStride is provided as it is, without warranties of any kind. GPS is imperfect, phones are imperfect, and a walk may not count the way you expected; we will do our best to fix real problems, but to the fullest extent the law allows we are not liable for anything that follows from using the app, including injury, loss or damage while walking, or ground that was lost, removed or not counted.
